Treating anxiety from neuropsychoanalysis to CBT: distinct perspectives and treatment approaches

Monday 12, 19 May and 2 June 2014

While the capacity for anxiety is an essential emotional response that enables one to deal with an environmental or interpersonal threat, much anxiety can be seen as irrelevant to the actual challenge being posed but the product of associations to past perils, whether conscious or unconscious. In this brief series of 3 presentations, we will look at underlying causes of fear, generalised anxiety or panic disorder and effective treatments.

Three distinct approaches have been selected to offer a wide perspective. Our first speaker, Lucy Biven, a Child and Adolescent Psychoanalyst, will explain the origins of anxiety within a psychodynamic and neurophysiological framework, offering an understanding of our core mammalian emotional systems as identified by Jaak Panksepp and the treatments this indicates. Our second presenter, Dr Victoria Bream Oldfield, offers a cognitive behavioural approach, found to be highly effective and the core modality in the NHS for anxiety disorders. Finally, Dr David Beales will explain the physiology of fear or panic and how these feelings can be managed by simple breathing exercises. Each presentation offers a viable therapeutic approach that can be applied as an adjunct to any modality or used as a treatment approach in itself.
