Borderline Bodies

Working with the Right Brain and Affect Regulation in Developmentally Traumatised Patients

A 1-day seminar led by Dr Clara Mucci

Saturday 4 May 2019 - London

FULL PROGRAMME
09.30   Registration and coffee
10.00

The birth of the self from the other and working with affect regulation
In this session, Clara will explain how the body is the place where both nature, determined by genetics and inherited characteristics, and culture, determined by the individual's physical and relational environment, are inscribed. She will explain the process of the transmission of transgenerational trauma through the right hemisphere of the caregiver to the right hemisphere of the developing child. We will consider how this communication of affect can occur vicariously, even in the absence of actual traumatisation, when the carer's attachment system is rekindled and forms the basis for attacks on the body.
11.30   Coffee
12.00

Assessment and diagnosis of 'borderline bodies'
Clara will present two cases for the audience to evaluate using charts which have been designed to help the practitioner to identify a range of vulnerabilities: attachment trauma, certain personality disorders, levels of attack on the body, the incapacity to dream, severe alexithymia and sexual identity diffusion. Possible clinical dynamics will be discussed as well as how to respond. Clara's tools include mirroring, implicit memory evocation, working with traumatic memories and bodily and verbal enactment.
13.30   Lunch
14.30

Working with developmentally-based psychosomatic disorders
Clara will present a final case which will demonstrate how to work with psychosomatic disorders with a developmental origin. The discussion will distinguish between hysterics and true psychosomatic disorders.
15.30   Tea
16.00

Live Supervision
Participants will be invited to talk with Clara about clients with whom they feel stuck and to receive brief, live supervision.
17.00   End
