Working with High Intensity States of Consciousness:

Ego-disintegration or spiritual breakthrough?

With Dr Angela Cotter, Viv Fogel, Dr Tim Read, Dr Malcolm Rushton and Laurie Slade

Saturday 15 December 2018 - London

This conference will explore links between early trauma and high intensity states of consciousness. For some psychotherapists working with 'non-ordinary states', the 'unknowable' and the 'numinous', including archetypal penetration and crisis of meaning, is integral to their work. To others, such heightened types of consciousness are concerning expressions of ego disintegration. Our speakers will describe a stance where understanding, acceptance and normalisation of the client's experience however strange can be a starting point for integration, growth and healing.

Our speakers will discuss how they work towards building upon and strengthening the client's sense of self in order that they can contain, manage and make meaning of these experiences. It can be that for the very fragile ego this could lead to destabilisation and at worst a psychosis or breakdown. The therapist's role when working with high intensity states from a transpersonal perspective would be akin to a spiritual mentoring. The therapist accompanies the client on their journey, sharing in the wonder and awe, rather than fearfully analysing, pathologising or explaining away the manifestations of this reorganisation. If spiritual emergency can be viewed as a breakthrough to meaning and purpose the client is reassured to trust in the process and access the psychospiritual growth potential.

This work requires deep process for both the therapist and client. The therapist needs to have faced their own breakdown or breakthrough and to have an evolved openness to the unknown. Can the therapist trust that they can truly, fearlessly be in the unknown with their patients/clients and not have to be one step ahead? Can there be a belief that the transpersonal realm and psyche or soul will indeed show the way through.
