The Inner Baby on the Couch

Infant Development and Relational Psychoanalysis

A 1-day seminar led by Dr Stephen Seligman

Friday 18 May - London

1-day seminar led by Stephen Seligman suitable for psychotherapists who want to learn more about how analytical ideas of infant development can reveal the dynamic subtleties of relating with their adult patients.

This seminar will explore whether a greater understanding of how a baby's lived bodily experience can help psychotherapists to relate more sensitively to their adult patients. Dr Stephen Seligman will consider analogies between infant-parent and patient-therapist patterns of relating, emphasizing the interactive and emotional dimensions common to infant-parent relationships and psychotherapy, transference and countertransference as intertwined and bidirectional aspects of the psychodynamic processes, and giving direct attention to how we use our imagery of infants and children in formulating and intervening in our work.

Providing the structure of the seminar, different "analytic babies" will be described and compared - Freud's baby, Klein's baby, Winnicott's baby, the Relational baby. By surveying these different theoretical models we will be helped to understand how these can make our work with adults more vivid and immediate. We will be offered clarification of how current intersubjective perspectives, attachment theory, and Bionian models about "thinking" can be integrated, and how looking at their very early interactions can illuminate how the feeling of having a lively future is missing in some hard-to-reach patients. Video illustrations will be included, and case material will be considered.
