Working Psychotherapeutically with Sadism
A seminar series for psychotherapists and psychologists

Friday evenings - 3 October to 12 December 2014

This series of seminars brings together a rich collection of talks from several theoretical orientations to help us understand the developmental and interpersonal aspects of sadism and sadistic behaviour, from its early manifestations in the family to its expression in the therapeutic relationship. We will be examining the psychological objective of taking pleasure in the suffering of others, the extent to which this is chosen or whether the sadist is the victim of unconscious processes driving the sadistic behaviour. The series speakers will consider varied expressions of sadism from dominant, humiliating or demeaning behaviour to repeated and violent sexual acts against others. We will not just be focusing on patient's stories of sadism but also how it appears in the consulting room in the dynamics of the therapy and interpersonal space. What, we will be asking, is the hidden need in the sadist's mind? How can psychotherapy help?
