Elizabeth Crawford
Elizabeth is a basket maker working primarily in wild foraged materials that include various river plants, rushes, barks and wood. Her pieces incorporate sculptural design, carved wood, woven textiles and basketry, as much as possible using traditional hand crafting techniques. In taught workshops and in her own practice, Elizabeth seeks to create a space where the meditative and somatic elements of weaving and plant connection can be explored. She is interested in the psycho-spiritual and physiological landscapes of plant hunting, harvest and weaving and how these can deepen our relationship with our local ecosystems, as well as with innate and ancient human capacities.
In 2022 Elizabeth won First Prize in the Contemporary category of the ‘Basketry of the Year Competition’, awarded by the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers. She is also a Herbalist, and holds a degree in Herbal Medicine from the University of Lincoln. She lives and works on the edge of Dartmoor.
